The Synology DiskStation DS223 is a compact 2-bay desktop NAS with a quad-core 1.7GHz processor, 2GB DDR4 memory, hot-swappable storage, Btrfs support and flexible RAID options for home and small-office use.

Product Description

The Synology DiskStation DS223 is a compact 2-bay network attached storage system designed for centralised file storage, backup, photo management, file sharing and surveillance.

It is powered by a Realtek RTD1619B quad-core 1.7GHz processor and includes 2GB of DDR4 non-ECC system memory.

Two hot-swappable drive bays support compatible 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA solid-state drives. Storage drives are sold separately, allowing the system to be configured according to the required capacity and workload.

Supported storage configurations include Synology Hybrid RAID, Basic, JBOD, RAID 0 and RAID 1. Synology Hybrid RAID or RAID 1 can provide protection against the failure of one installed drive when two suitable drives are used.

The DS223 supports both Btrfs and ext4 internal file systems. Btrfs enables supported data-protection features including shared-folder snapshots, file self-healing and rapid recovery from selected accidental or unwanted changes.

One Gigabit Ethernet port provides network connectivity, while three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports support compatible external storage devices and selected USB accessories. A front USB Copy button allows supported files to be copied between the NAS and a connected USB device.

Synology DiskStation Manager provides browser-based tools for managing storage, users, shared folders, backups and supported applications.

Synology Drive enables private-cloud file access, synchronisation, sharing and computer-folder backup across supported devices. Synology Photos provides private photo and video organisation, mobile backup and sharing functions.

Hyper Backup can protect selected NAS data and system settings to compatible USB storage, another Synology system, supported servers or selected cloud destinations.

Snapshot Replication can create point-in-time copies of supported shared folders, helping users recover earlier versions after accidental deletion, unwanted changes or selected ransomware incidents.

Surveillance Station includes two default device licences and supports up to 20 compatible IP cameras, depending on the camera resolution, codec, frame rate and other active workloads.

The DS223 is suited to home users, professionals and small offices that need an accessible private-cloud and backup platform without the complexity or capacity of a larger business NAS.

Compatibility Note

Confirm that the selected storage drives are officially compatible with the Synology DS223 before ordering.

The DS223 supports:

• Up to two compatible 3.5-inch SATA hard drives
• Up to two compatible 2.5-inch SATA solid-state drives

The system does not include storage drives.

The DS223 does not include M.2 NVMe slots, PCIe expansion, memory-expansion slots or support for Synology expansion units.

Hot-swapping should only be performed when permitted by the current RAID and storage-pool condition.

Synology Hybrid RAID and RAID 1 require two suitable drives to provide one-drive fault tolerance. RAID 0 and JBOD do not provide drive-failure protection.

Available capacity will be lower than the combined manufacturer-rated drive capacity because of RAID, formatting, system partitions and file-system data.

Actual performance depends on the installed drives, RAID configuration, network equipment, client devices, DSM configuration and active applications.

RAID can protect against selected drive failures but does not replace an independent backup.
