The Synology DiskStation DS124 is a compact 1-bay desktop NAS powered by a quad-core 1.7GHz processor with 1GB DDR4 memory, Gigabit Ethernet, Btrfs support and Synology DiskStation Manager.
Product Description
The Synology DiskStation DS124 is a compact 1-bay network attached storage system designed for centralised file storage, backup, photo management and secure remote access.
It is suitable for home users, professionals and small offices that need a private storage location for documents, photographs, videos, computer backups and shared files.
The DS124 is powered by a Realtek RTD1619B quad-core 1.7GHz processor and includes 1GB of DDR4 non-ECC system memory.
One internal drive bay supports a compatible 3.5-inch SATA hard drive or 2.5-inch SATA solid-state drive. Installing a 2.5-inch drive requires the separately sold Synology Type C Disk Holder.
The DS124 supports Btrfs and ext4 internal file systems. Btrfs enables supported data-protection features such as shared-folder snapshots, file self-healing and Snapshot Replication.
Synology DiskStation Manager provides browser-based tools for managing storage, user accounts, shared folders, backups and compatible applications.
Synology Drive supports private-cloud file access, synchronisation, sharing and computer backup, while Synology Photos provides private photo and video management.
Hyper Backup can protect selected data and system settings to compatible external drives, another Synology system, supported servers or selected cloud destinations.
Surveillance Station includes two default device licences and supports up to twelve compatible IP cameras, depending on the recording configuration and other active workloads.
The DS124 includes one Gigabit Ethernet port and two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports.
This is a single-bay NAS and supports Basic storage only. It does not provide RAID drive-failure protection because only one internal drive can be installed.
The DS124 is supplied without a storage drive.

The DS124 supports:
• One compatible 3.5-inch SATA hard drive
• One compatible 2.5-inch SATA solid-state drive
A 2.5-inch drive requires the optional Synology Type C Disk Holder.
The DS124 does not support:
• More than one internal drive
• RAID mirroring or parity RAID
• Hot-swapping
• Memory expansion
• M.2 NVMe SSDs
• PCIe expansion cards
• Synology expansion units
The available storage capacity will be lower than the drive manufacturer’s stated capacity because of formatting, system partitions and file-system data.
Actual performance depends on the installed drive, network connection, client device, file type, DSM configuration and active applications.
Because this is a single-drive system, important data should also be backed up to another device or supported backup destination.
