Product Description

The Synology ActiveProtect DP320 is a dedicated desktop backup appliance designed for centralised data protection, backup management and business recovery.

Unlike a general-purpose NAS, the DP320 is supplied as a preconfigured backup solution with ActiveProtect Manager, two 8TB SATA hard drives and a predefined RAID 1 storage configuration.

RAID 1 mirrors data across both installed drives, allowing the appliance to tolerate the failure of one drive. Synology suggests the DP320 for a backup source of approximately 5TB, although actual requirements depend on retention periods, data-change rates, workload types and deduplication.

The appliance is powered by an AMD Ryzen R1600 dual-core processor and includes 8GB of system memory.

It supports backup and recovery for compatible virtual machines, physical servers, Windows and macOS computers, Linux systems, file servers, Microsoft 365 services and selected databases.

Supported environments include VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, NetApp ONTAP and Nutanix Files, subject to Synology’s current compatibility requirements.

ActiveProtect Manager provides centralised protection plans, workload monitoring, backup verification, recovery testing and policy-based backup management.

Cyber-resilience features include immutable backup retention, Write Once Read Many storage, encryption and supported air-gapped backup workflows.

The DP320 supports entire-machine recovery, file-level recovery, bare-metal recovery and supported physical-to-virtual or virtual-to-virtual restoration.

One dedicated Gigabit Ethernet port is provided for management traffic, while a separate Gigabit Ethernet port handles backup-data transfer.

The appliance can operate as an individual backup server or within a compatible ActiveProtect deployment. Cluster-management functionality and workload limits are subject to applicable licensing, software versions and deployment requirements.

Compatibility Note

The DP320 is a dedicated ActiveProtect backup appliance and should not be treated as a general-purpose Synology DiskStation, conventional shared-storage NAS or user-configurable RAID enclosure.

Supported workload versions and configurations depend on the current ActiveProtect Manager release and Synology compatibility requirements.

The suggested 5TB backup source is a planning estimate rather than the appliance’s formatted storage capacity. Actual protected capacity depends on:

• Available network bandwidth
• Recovery requirements

Cluster management of up to 10 servers or 500 workloads requires the applicable ActiveProtect licence and supported deployment configuration. This figure does not mean that 500 workloads can all be backed up concurrently to one appliance.

RAID 1 provides protection against the failure of one installed drive but does not replace off-site or independently isolated backup copies.
