The Synology RX1222sas is a 12-bay 2U rackmount expansion unit designed for compatible Synology SAS-based storage platforms.

It supports compatible 3.5-inch SAS HDDs, 3.5-inch SATA HDDs, 2.5-inch SAS SSDs and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs.

The expansion unit connects to its compatible host system using SAS expansion connectivity and is managed directly through Synology DSM Storage Manager.

Supported deployments can scale with multiple RX1222sas units. Synology specifies expansion of up to 84 additional drives using a maximum of seven RX1222sas units, depending on the host platform.

Hot-swappable drive bays, system fans and redundant 500W power supplies help minimise the impact of routine maintenance and hardware replacement.

Synology recommends keeping storage volumes physically within the same NAS or expansion unit for better performance rather than spanning a single volume across different physical units.
